An approach to the virtual reconstruction of heritage

In 2009 we started this project that brought our research closer to the virtual reconstruction of heritage.

New technologies

We use our experience in 3D design to apply it to a new sector: heritage.

A case study

The Cartuja building maintains a large part of its original factory, although thanks to the virtual reconstruction we were able to visually show all the modifications.

Multidisciplinary team

We are a team of three different areas of the University of Burgos: Languages and Computer Systems, History of Art and Audiovisual Communication.

Research on didactics

The main objective of the project was to use it as a prototype to assess whether new technologies influence heritage education.

An ambitious project

The Cartuja de Miraflores in 3D

 

We set out to find our limits with technique and technology, optimizing our resources to seek the best possible finish. Thus, we established an optimized methodology of work that we use in subsequent projects to be more efficient each time. We developed a first model of the Cartuja de Miraflores with a high polygon count for the time (50,000 p.) and we combined it with other tools to find a realistic finish.

 

 

The project

 

 

The possibility of obtaining measurements of the original building and some of the textures that were preserved from the fifteenth century was essential to our work.

We made 236 individual textures to apply to each object of the 3D model with its different filters (specular and bump)

To make an optimized methodology we first calculated the cost of resources that we were going to have for this project. In this way we made several modeling tests to check the cost in human, technical and temporal resources in order to optimize the processes of the methodology looking for the best possible finish.

Visualization

Virtual Reality Cave Visualization

This project was the pilot for our virtual reality room DigiUBU, which had a state-of-the-art system in virtual visualization, with projected wall and floors, 3D glasses and virtual positioning systems.

Visualization in Oculus Rift

The model was reused for the evolution of virtual reality visualization systems. In this case we used the model of the Cartuja de Miraflores to make a virtual tour of the chapel for informational purposes.

Video

A video compendium of all the first renders with post-production effects was made to disseminate the project.
